On Wednesday, an SUV ran over 25 sheriffs and police recruits in Los Angeles County, seriously injuring five.

According to USA Today, the officials arrested the SUV driver on suspicion of attempted murder.

Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, of Diamond Bar, was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer. Further charges are pending, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The authorities have not yet been able to identify the victims of the Los Angeles SUV accident Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva of Los Angeles County stated at a press conference on Wednesday that one of the five badly injured was placed on a ventilator.

Broken bones, amputations, and head injuries were among the most severe, he said.

The incident was caught on video.

The SUV Driver Was Driving on the Wrong Side, According to the Los Angeles County Sheriffs

On Wednesday morning, an SUV driver allegedly crossed over into the wrong side of the road in the Whittier area and struck a group of LA County police recruits who were out for a run, seriously hurting five people.

The authorities said the scene following the crash was chaotic and looked like a plane crash, per US News.

Some of the more seriously injured were taken straight to hospitals by deputies after they received assistance from a neighboring county fire station.

According to the authorities, the driver tested negative on the field sobriety test.

Jail records online said that Gutierrez is expected to appear in court Friday, but it is currently unknown if Gutierrez has a lawyer who can represent him in court.

The Los Angeles SUV accident occurred at around 6:30 a.m., while many local agencies and about seventy-five LA County police recruits were running in formation down the street.

They were joined by eight road guards wearing fluorescent vests as a safety measure, two black and white radio cars, and the trainees were wearing white T-shirts and green shorts, according to sheriff's authorities.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office still needs to receive the sheriff's authorities' case against Gutierrez for prosecution, but they plan to do so on Friday.

Defense Attorney Reacts to Los Angeles SUV Accident

According to Ambrosio E. Rodriguez, Gutierrez's defense attorney and a former prosecutor in neighboring Riverside County, the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Gutierrez acted with the intent to kill to convict him of attempted murder.

In his words, "There is a high bar to prove it" in establishing that the suspect intended to murder the cadets, ABC News noted.

According to Rodriguez, who is not involved in the investigation, the primary concern is whether the driver applied the brakes before the vehicle rammed the LA County police recruits.

Evidence retrieved from the vehicle, Rodriguez added, could be significant.

"If he is slamming on the brakes and realizes he is doing something wrong, it is very different than if he is pressing on the gas," he said.
