Henry Cavill revealed that he had been fired from his role as Superman by the new bosses of DC Studios.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the 39-year-old British actor told his 22.9 million followers that he "just had a meeting" with filmmaker James Gunn and film producer Peter Safran, who were named co-chairmen and chief executive officers of DC Studios last October.

"And it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life," Cavill said.

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and happiest of fortunes," he added.

Despite not reclaiming the role, Cavill told his fans that they "mourn for a bit," but "Superman is still around." He noted that everything Superman "stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there!"

He then said: "My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Cavill most recently appeared as Superman at the end of Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam," teasing a showdown between Superman and Black Adam. However, that was just days before Gunn and Safran were brought on as the new DC Films' heads, The Daily Mail reported.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's Final DC Film Plan Will Have Young Superman

James Gunn has said that he and Peter Safran had completed their plan for DC. And while he will share more next year, Gunn revealed that one of the projects is a film about a young Superman, according to IGN. Gunn noted that he and Safran were pleased with their plan, and among those on the DC slate is Superman.

"In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill," Gunn tweeted.

Gunn also revealed that he and Cavill talked, and while they will not be working together on a new Man of Steel film, they discussed "about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future."

Gunn will reportedly write the script for the upcoming Superman movie but will not be directing the film. He said it will also not be an origin movie like 2013's "Man of Steel."

When a curious fan asked if it would be possible for Ben Affleck to direct the Superman project, Gunn said the actor is interested in directing a DC superhero movie. However, he noted that they "just have to find the right project."

IGN reported that Gunn and Safran seemed to have put "Man of Steel 2" on hold while thinking about whether to depart with the Snyderverse completely.

Fans Are Disappointed With James Gunn and Peter Safran's Decision

Many fans were disappointed because they thought that Henry Cavill was the ideal choice for the role of Superman. They anticipated his return after his cameo appearance as Superman in the "Black Adam" film.

DC fans are also disappointed by reports that "Wonder Woman 3" will no longer move forward under the new slate. Despite the backlash to its sequel, Wonder Woman has been considered one of the strongest film franchises under the DC Extended Universe.

However, it is still unclear if Gal Gadot will continue in the role of Wonder Woman and how Wonder Woman will fit into James Gunn and Peter Safran's slate of projects.
