A long-time ally and family friend of Mark Meadows is involved in a campaign finance scandal. Lynda Bennett, who tried to replace the former Trump White House chief of staff in Congress in 2020 but failed, allegedly accepted a contribution from a family member exceeding $25,000 in 2019.

According to charging documents filed by prosecutors, the payment seemed suspicious as the contribution was made in the name of another person. However, details about the allegation are still sparse, but Bennett is expected to enter a guilty plea.

On Monday, prosecutors asked U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper to set a hearing for Bennett, who lost in a Republican primary campaign to Madison Cawthorn in 2020.

Politico reported that she has agreed to plead guilty to accepting an illegal campaign contribution and is expected to formally enter the plea agreement in federal court in Washington, D.C.

The report said she had already signed the paperwork. Bennett's attorney has already released a statement regarding the case and said the violation was a technical one and that the money was only a loan from a family member.

The lawyer added that her client is now looking forward to putting that past behind her.

How Did Lynda Bennett Break Campaign Finance Laws?

Campaign Finance Laws only allow individuals to contribute up to $2,800 to a political campaign during the primary, and another limit of $2,800 in the general elections, making it $5,600 in total.

The $25,000 contributed by a family member means the friend of Mark Meadows broke campaign finance laws.

According to the Associated Press, the documents did not identify the relative who made the $25,000 contribution. It is also unclear which campaign contributions were unlawful if one was to take a look at Bennett's campaign finance records.

It indicated that she loaned herself $80,000 at the end of 2019 but paid a portion back. When she terminated her political committee, the records showed there were no outstanding balances.

Lynda Bennett Lost to Madison Cawthorn Despite Mark Meadows' Endorsement

When Mark Meadows vacated his seat as representative of the 11th District of North Carolina, Lynda Bennett ran to replace him.

Meadows even endorsed Bennett, who was a close friend of his wife. Before running for office, she was a real estate agent, according to the Charlotte Observer.

However, she ran into stiff competition with Madison Cawthorn, who was seen as a rising star of the Republican Party at that time.

She advanced to a primary runoff with him but eventually lost the primary election despite initially having more votes than him. Cawthorn soon became Meadows' replacement in Congress.

However, despite being seen as a rising star for the Republican Party, Cawthorn soon became a pariah after he said in a podcast that many of his fellow Republican congressmen were engaging in sex parties.

He was quickly ousted from his seat after losing to Chuck Edwards in the primary election.
