The MTV Awards 2023, initially scheduled to be live but switched to a prerecorded broadcast due to the writers' strike, handed the top prize for the outstanding film to "Scream VI" on Sunday night, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Courteney Cox and the killer Ghostface, who accepted his trophies via prerecorded video, also won for their respective performances in the film.

While accepting the award for best film, Ghostface joked that the iconic question "What is your favorite scary movie?" may now be answered.

Three awards, including best show, went to "The Last of Us," another significant winner.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were recognized as the best combo, and Pascal was chosen best hero. Two prizes also went to the Netflix series "Stranger Things."

Tom Cruise, lead of Top Gun: Maverick, was awarded for outstanding performance in a film while sitting in a fighter jet's cockpit. Jenna Ortega won the best performance award in a show for "Wednesday."

The MTV Awards 2023 Ceremony Without Host

Winners were announced on Sunday, May 7, 2023, during a telecast of the MTV Movie & TV Awards without a red carpet or host, per Us Magazine.

Drew Barrymore was scheduled to host a live event. On May 4, however, she dropped out because of the Writers Guild of America strike.

"I have listened to the writers, and to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike. Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation," Barrymore said.

She also said that until a solution is found, she will patiently wait at home, inviting everyone to observe the proceedings.

She added that she cannot wait until next year to be a part of this and honor everything that MTV has accomplished by producing a show in which the audience votes on the recipients of several awards.

Meanwhile, Drew Barrymore is scheduled to host in 2024.

MTV confirmed that the awards presentation would no longer be televised live on May 6, one day after the Writers Guild of America declared that its members would picket outside the show at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Following the host's prerecorded sketches, viewers were treated to sneak peeks at numerous future flicks, including The Little Mermaid.
