A federal jury has found former President Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and awarded plaintiff E. Jean Carroll a total of $5 million in the battery and defamation suit against him.

The former Elle Magazine columnist accused the former president of sexually assaulting her in the dressing room of a high-class department store in Manhattan between 1995 and 1996. She sued him for defamation for denying the assault never happened, as well as for his constant insults publicly.

According to CNN, the jury awarded Carroll around $2 million in damages for her civil battery claim and almost $3 million for successfully proving her defamation claim against the ex-POTUS, who now adds this legal defeat to a recent string of legal setbacks that directly or indirectly involve him. This includes the Manhattan DA's Stormy Daniels hush money case, the Georgia election tampering case, the classified documents case, the January 6 case, and the now-concluded Trump Organization tax evasion case, which his company lost.

While the verdict was read, Carroll was seen smiling in the courtroom while holding one of her attorneys' hands. She was reportedly feeling a "sense of relief" after the verdict was passed.

Donald Trump Reacts to Losing Another Case

Following the verdict, the former president took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to vent and wrote that the jury's verdict was a "total disgrace" and said it was a "continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time."

CNN noted that he continued to say that he does not know E. Jean Carroll, despite the two being photographed together numerous times throughout the 1990s and 1980s.

Meanwhile, former President Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, also reacted to the verdict and called it "bogus."

Trump attorney Joe Tacopina says that this was a "strange verdict," and that he and his fellow Trump attorneys would "obviously" be appealing the verdict. He also added that his client "cannot get a fair trial in New York City" and blamed the jury pool for losing the case.

Despite losing this civil case, it cannot impede Trump's run for president, as noted in the Constitution. He is still the Republican frontrunner, ahead of rival Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida.

E. Jean Carroll Described in Detail How Donald Trump Raped Her

According to the BBC, one of the most pivotal moments of the trial was when accuser E. Jean Carroll finally took to the stand and described in front of the jury how Trump assaulted her.

She stated that she bumped into Trump inside the Manhattan Bergdorf Goodman store while shopping. She said that she and the real estate mogul exchanged banter before Trump asked her to come with him into a dressing room. After he closed the door, he held her against the wall and raped her.

This was followed by an intense cross-examination by Joe Tacopina, who pointed out why she did not scream for help. However, Carroll told him, "I'm not a screamer," before adding that some women come forward about getting sexually assaulted whether or not they will be asked about why they did not scream. She also stated that he was a member of the "silent generation," saying women her age were taught to keep quiet.
