The 2014 BET Awards took place Sunday night at the Nokia Theater at L.A. LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles.

Pharrell Williams, big brown hat and all, was the opening act. He proceeded to dazzle the crowd with his new single "Come Get It Bae," fresh off his latest album "G I R L."

But Pharrell wasn't alone onstage for long. Seemingly turning back the clock to the the late 90s/early 00s, the greatest female MC of them all, Missy Elliot popped up onstage. Elliot joined Williams onstage for a wildly entertaining performance of 2003's "Pass That Dutch," a song made famous by Missy. The capacity crowd went wild.

And the night was only getting started as other musical sensations, including Usher, Jennifer Hudson and John Legend, took to the stage.

Weezy, aka Lil Wayne, was also in attendance and gave his young daughter Reginae a shoutout.   Naturally, he also performed two songs including the chart topping smash "Believe Me." Drake's featured on the song, but he wasn't in attendance.

Comedian and actor Chris Rock, hosted the BET Awards and he didn't shy away from getting cracking a few jokes along the way. Rock couldn't resist taking a jab at heavy-set rapper Rick Ross.

"Dre has Beats, Rick Ross Dia-a-Beats."

The joke had Rock comparing the tatted up Ross to Beats by Dre creator and the first billionaire in hip-hop, Dr. Dre. But Ross quickly fired back on Twitter writing that "Chris Rock washed up haaa." But the joke was all in good fun and the evening was a fairly lighthearted affair, with no one person getting beat up that badly by Chris Rock's humor.

The night's big winners consisted of Nicki Minaj for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Drake for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.

Also, Pharrell came away with the coveted Video of the Year win for "Happy" as well as doubling up by securing the Best Male Pop Artist crown.

Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o was honored with a BET Award for Best Actress. The award was well-deserved, especially if you saw her in "12 Years A Slave," which also happened to be directed by Black British filmmaker Steve McQueen.
