Award-winning actor Robert De Niro has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of his grandson, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, E! Online reported.

The 79-year-old actor expressed profound distress over the passing of his beloved grandson in an official statement on July 3.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of my beloved grandson and find ourselves in a state of profound grief," De Niro conveyed.

He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of condolences received from well-wishers during this difficult time. The family kindly requested privacy to mourn the loss of young Leo.

The exact cause of his untimely passing has yet to be disclosed.

Drena De Niro, Leandro's mother and Robert's daughter from his previous marriage to Diahnne Abbott, also confirmed the devastating news through an Instagram tribute posted on July 2.

She expressed her deep maternal love alongside a touching photo of her departed son, describing him as her "beautiful sweet angel." Her emotional words convey the immeasurable bond they shared since the moment she felt him in her belly, encapsulating his profound impact on her life.

Tragedy struck the De Niro family when Leandro De Niro, the grandson of renowned actor Robert De Niro, was discovered lifeless in a prominent building located in lower Manhattan on Sunday afternoon, authorities have confirmed, per Insider.

Officers promptly responded to a distress call at 55 Wall Street shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. They arrived to find an unconscious and unresponsive young male, according to a spokesperson from the New York Police Department. It was later identified as the 19-year-old Leandro De Niro.

Despite the efforts of emergency medical services, De Niro was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by the NYPD.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will now undertake the solemn task of determining the cause of his untimely passing.

He posted a somber black image, symbolizing the depth of his sorrow, and responded to Drena's post, CBS News noted.

In his heartfelt response, Mare acknowledged that words are inadequate to fully convey Leandro's immense joy and the profound loss they now endure alongside their families and friends.

"He is Godschild now. On this full moon, his spirit luminates what could not be seen in the dark. You can't spell LOVE without LEO," he wrote.
