Missing British actor Julian Sands, who had been missing near Mount Baldy in LA since January, has been confirmed dead. This came after hikers discovered human remains in the wilderness outside Los Angeles.

The human remains were reported by civilian hikers to the Fontana Sheriff's Station before the corpse was taken to the San Bernardino County Coroner for identification, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The British actor usually went hiking in the area but went missing as rare snow storms battered Los Angeles in January.

"The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood," read the statement from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.

Authorities added that they are still investigating Sands's cause of death as further tests are still pending. The statement also thanked everyone who helped locate the actor's body, saying, "We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands."

Sands has often talked about his love of the outdoors.

"The local mountains offer great adventure, you can go out for an hour, a day, or even several days," he said during a May 2020 interview with Thrive Global.

"It's always different and always fantastic. And of course, I do believe in a certain athleticism for me as an actor, keeping fit is important. So living, or being based in Los Angeles - actors don't really live anywhere, they are always on the road - lends itself to a wonderful outdoors lifestyle," the actor added, explaining how his lifestyle led to his love of the great outdoors.

Julian Sands's Family Released Statement About Actor's Disappearance Days Before Body Was Found

On June 17, five months after the actor disappeared, officials renewed their search for the missing "Leaving Las Vegas" actor. Even with over 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff participating, as well as two helicopters, they were unable to find him until civilian hikers found his body on June 24, according to CNN.

Just a few days before his body was found, though, on June 21, his family released a statement on the renewed search efforts, saying they "continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer."

Who Is Julian Sands?

The British actor was best known for his role in the 1989 classic, "A Room With a View." It adapted E.M. Forster's novel and starred famed Harry Potter actress Helena Bonham Carter.

Before that, however, he gained critical acclaim in his performance in the Oscar-winning movie, "The Killing Fields," in 1984, alongside Sam Waterston and John Malkovich, according to Yahoo! Entertainment.

A prolific actor, Sands was the title character in the "Warlock" horror film series and the 1998 remake of "The Phantom of the Opera." He also had roles in several TV series, such as "Ghost Whisperer," "Lipstick Jungle," "The Blacklist," and "Smallville."
