Hikers made a distressing discovery when they stumbled upon human remains near the area where British actor Julian Sands vanished while hiking on Mount Baldy, according to SFGATE.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department reported that on Saturday around 10 am, hikers exploring the mountain came across the remains and promptly alerted a nearby sheriff's station.

Deputies went to the location on foot, and the coroner's office subsequently took the body. The sheriff's department indicated that the identification process would be completed in the coming week but refrained from providing further details.

Julian Sands, a 65-year-old actor renowned for his roles in films like "Leaving Las Vegas," "A Room With a View," and the TV series "24," is known to be an avid hiker and resides in the North Hollywood area.

He was reported missing on January 13 after hiking along the Baldy Bowl Trail in San Bernardino County, approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles.

Mount Baldy, towering over Los Angeles at 10,000 feet, has earned a reputation as one of the most treacherous mountains in the United States, claiming numerous lives over the years.

The challenging terrain, limited cell service, and inexperienced hikers resulted in 19 rescues and at least two deaths on its steep and winding trails during the previous winter.

Mount Baldy poses challenges and risks for hikers due to its unforgiving terrain and variable weather conditions. Experienced and well-equipped individuals who are aware of the dangers often visit the mountain, while others come to learn and develop mountaineering skills.

As the snow began to melt on Mount Baldy in recent weeks, a new search effort was initiated to locate Julian Sands.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department mobilized search-and-rescue teams, drones, and helicopters to locate him, but their efforts have not yielded any results.

Julian Sands Search Was Suspended Due to Sever Winter Conditions

The search for the British actor had been suspended due to severe winter conditions across the western United States during the spring, per DEADLINE.

However, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office conducted eight searches for the experienced outdoorsman and eight other operations.

The search efforts resumed last Saturday, involving over 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff. The search covered the wilderness and remote areas across the mountain, utilizing two helicopters and drone crews.
