Animated movies, especially those of the princess kind, don't typically top the movie charts, but "Frozen" continues to make headlines since its release.

The Oscar-winning film is the number one downloaded video in the first half of the year, according to a report from Rentrak on USA Today.

Rentrak is a tracking firm for movie studios, cable and satellite TV, local television stations, national networks, advertisers, media agencies and Video on Demand content providers, according to its website. It said that typically R-rated movies top the charts.

At the start of this month, the soundtrack of the movie topped the mid-year music charts, according to Radio.com.

"Electronic sell-through and Internet Video on Demand continued to see notable growth in the first half of 2014, largely driven by highly popular films which are demonstrating strong and unwavering performance in the first six months of 2014 via the digital download platform," says Chris Roberts, Rentrak's Senior Vice President of Sales, OnDemand Everywhere, told Broadwayworld.

The movie was a top downloader in standard and HD quality, as well as the top viewed movie through video on-demand content providers.

The movie first made headlines after it sold more than $400 million in tickets last year, followed by the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.

In Japan, the movie brought in almost 25 billion yen at the box office in four months, according to The Japan Times.

The movie is the first U.S.-produced movie in 13 years to be a top seller, and is close to the Titanic's record of 26 billion yen.

An opinion article in the Belfast Telegraph attempts to explain the movie's global popularity.

"It is a huge, worldwide hit, especially adored in the UK, Japan, Malta, Ireland, Denmark and Venezuala. It's taken a billion and a half dollars at the box office, garnered many awards, and won high praise from the critics," said Mary Kenny in the Belfast Telegraph."The Disney production team has said the success of Frozen is a surprise, and yet, it's obvious why it has such wide appeal: the music is infectious, and the animation, a mixture of hand-drawn and computer-generated images, is marvellous."
