A freak accident in Manhattan's Upper East Side has left a woman dead and a neighborhood in shock. The woman died after being run over by the yellow taxicab, and then she was pinned down by it when it overturned.

The accident happened at around 2 p.m. when the taxi began making a left turn onto East 79th Street from Madison Avenue, according to NBC New York. The 58-year-old woman was crossing the street when the taxi struck her. Construction workers and pedestrians in the area rushed to help the woman, who had been pinned down by the taxi.

"Everybody was screaming. We just wanted to know what happened," Guillermo Silva, a construction worker working nearby, told NBC New York.

Silva, along with at least six other of his coworkers and other good Samaritans began trying to lift the taxi and flip upright to free the woman trapped underneath, reports NBC New York.

"I took what strength I had and belted it out and lifted the car. The other two guys pushed it, and we rested it on my thigh. We braced ourselves and then tossed it over," said bystander Justin Havlik, who helped in the rescue attempt.

However, according to the New York Daily News, the dozen of volunteers could not save the woman. After she was taken from underneath the vehicle, bystanders tried to speak with her but could see the extent of her injuries.

"She had a lot of head trauma. ... I ran over and tried pulling her out but she was pinned," Havlik, 35, told the Daily News.

"I just wanted to save her. I didn't want to move her because her arm was mangled. I was just trying to talk to her and keep her calm," said Sam Easley, 58, who also helped in the rescue.

The woman was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital but she was declared dead as soon as she arrived, reports CBS New York. The 30-year-old taxi driver suffered no injuries and his 32-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, according to CBS and the Daily News.

Police are currently investigating the crash but have not charged the driver.
