The film "Cantinflas" hit theaters Aug. 29 and proved to be a great success, making 2.63 million in the box office the first weekend of its release in the United States.

Cantinflas was Mexico's most celebrated comedian of all time even winning a Golden Globe for his performance in the film "Around the World in 80 Days" released in 1956. The film that tells the story of the life of Mario Moreno (Cantinflas) has been nominated for an Oscar.

"Cantinflas" has been selected by the Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to represent Mexico at the Oscars, as was announced on Thursday. The film will compete in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category. Selecting the film was the task of a committee of 128 representatives of Mexico's film community. The cast that brought the life of Cantinflas to the big screen consists of Oscar Jaenada as Cantinflas, Joaquin Cosio, Gerardo Luis Mendez, Teresa Ruiz, Gabriela de la Garza and Cassandra Ciangherotti. The film was directed by Sebastian del Amo and produced by Vidal Cantu and Adolfo Franco by Kenio Films.

"The selection of our film [would] motivate us to continue producing inspiring stories to the highest global standards of quality and entertainment, is a great opportunity to encourage more people to go see it in theaters," Adolfo Franco excitedly said about the nomination.

Mario Moreno Ivanova (Moreno's son) and his wife were very happy with the project and its turnout. They were present at the premiere of the film along with Karla Zapien and Valentina Moreno, Cantinfla's granddaughters. It would be another accomplishment for the legacy of Moreno to win an Oscar in 2014 years after his passing. Mario Moreno passed away April 20, 1993, but his films live on and are still televised through Hispanic networks today. The Mexican actor even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, which reads "Cantinflas."
