The first three weeks of the 2014 National Football League season are in the books, and huge surprises, big disappointments, blowouts and comebacks have highlighted the first three weeks of this NFL season.

Staying on top of your waiver wire is important because you never know when you must pick up key free agents.

Here are five waiver wire players you should consider selecting in your league:

5. Brandin Cooks

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Drew Brees may have found a new friend in Brandin Cooks. The rookie wide receiver was drafted in the first round this year out of Oregon State. So far in his first three career games, Cooks has 18 receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown. In his last game against the Minnesota Vikings, Cooks had a team-high eight receptions for 74 yards. The Saints are a pass happy team, so Cooks should get passes thrown his way all season long.

4. Lorenzo Taliaferro

Lorenzo Taliaferro had 91 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. Obviously Ray Rice won't be running for the Ravens anymore this season, but it also appears as if Bernard Pierce is out for time. Pierce has a thigh injury and his return is still unknown. Taliaferro is a big back who is capable of doing a lot of damage in goal line situations.

3. Knile Davis

Knile Davis has done a tremendous job filling in for starter Jamaal Charles, who is injured. In Week 2, Davis had two touchdowns and 105 total yards against the Denver Broncos on the road. In a Week 3 victory against the Miami Dolphins, Davis carried the ball 32 times for 132 yards and a touchdown. There's still a good chance that Charles will play against New England Patriots (Monday Night Football), but Davis should still get his touches.

2. Jordan Matthews

After the Philadelphia Eagles cut DeSean Jackson, they needed to find a new wide receiver. They drafted Jordan Matthews in the first round this year, and he's done a good job. In his last game, against the Washington Redskins, Matthews caught two touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Foles targeted Matthews nine times, which tells us he's getting open quite a bit.

1. Kirk Cousins

If you have quarterback problems and Kirk Cousins is available in your league, pick him up. Robert Griffin III isn't fully healthy with ankle and leg injuries, and Cousins can throw. In Week 3 against the Eagles, Cousins threw for 427 yards and three touchdowns. His passer rating was 103.4. Incredibly, Cousins was never even sacked. According to NFL.com, Cousins is still only owned in 20 percent of Fantasy Leagues. Cousins and the Redskins face the New York Giants next on Thursday Night Football.
