Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Scott Brooks thinks very highly of his point guard. He recently said, "I believe Russell is the best point guard in basketball."

That got us to thinking on who the best point guard in the National Basketball Association is heading into the 2014-15 season. The NBA is loaded with young and veteran point guards who have proven themselves.

A three-time NBA All-Star, Westbrook isn't a prototypical point guard like a John Stockton, but he can score. Despite playing alongside the best scorer in the NBA, Kevin Durant, Westbrook only averages 6.9 assists per game. Westbrook is an inconsistent point guard who can single-handily win you games, but lose you games, as well. It's amazing how he takes more shots than Durant sometimes. Still, Westbrook is one of the most athletic point guards who never takes a play off and always shows up in the postseason.

Chris Paul III is today's best passer. Paul leads the NBA in assists year in and year out, even though he doesn't have a superstar scorer on his team. Paul is without a doubt the best distributor of the basketball, but his defense and postseason resumé hasn't been very impressive. Paul also isn't capable of taking over playoff games, like Westbrook does.

By far, the most underrated point guard in the league is Tony Parker. Parker isn't very outspoken and he doesn't play in a huge media market, so a lot of people don't give him the credit he deserves. Parker has a much better playoff legacy than Paul, having won four NBA Championships as a starter. The knock against Parker is he plays with a superior cast of players around him, benefitting from playing with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.

Then there's Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose.

Both are very talented point guards, but recent injuries have held them back. The Chicago Bulls have only had Rose play 49 total regular season games over the last three seasons. Even when Rose was healthy, he was only able to get the team out of the first round just once, in the 2010-2011 NBA season when the Bulls reached the Eastern Conference Finals.

Rondo, on the other hand, has been battling multiple injuries lately, as well. Rondo hasn't started more than 53 games in a year since the 2010-11 season with the Boston Celtics. Rondo is a terrific passer, but his free throw shooting is awful for a point guard at just 62 percent.

Jeremy Lin and Stephen Curry are two young point guards who have scoring abilities. Curry is by far the best three-point shooter in the league, and the Golden State Warriors know this. Curry isn't the typical point guard, and he does turn the ball over quite a bit. Lin can also be a scoring threat while distributing the basketball and Lin is also a decent defender. Kyrie Irving has shown good signs, but still has more to prove. Playing with LeBron James will certainly help that.

In the end, it depends on what type of point guard you prefer. If you want a classic point guard, then Chris Paul is the man to choose. If you want a perimeter shooting point guard, then Stephen Curry is the correct decision. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook is the best choice if you desire a dynamic point guard.

But, then again, if you want a point guard who is very well-balanced and shows up come playoff time, than Tony Parker could be your guy.
