Peyton Manning etched his name into the record books anew after becoming the National Football League's all-time leader in touchdown passes during their 42-17 win against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

Manning needed two touchdowns to tie Brett Favre's record of 508 touchdown passes, but he made sure that he'll break the record on Sunday night as he threw four touchdown passes.

Manning surpassed Favre's record when he scored an eight-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas late in the second period. To celebrate the record-setting play, Manning's teammates played keep away -- a celebration that was coined by the star quarterback during one of their practices last week.

"He actually planned that himself," Thomas said of the celebration via Yahoo Sports. "He came to me, it was either Thursday or Friday. He said, 'If anybody scores 509, this is what we should do.' So he came to me and said, 'Keep the ball away, hop-scotch or whatever.' I was like, 'Cool.' So we got everybody in on Friday and we practiced it, and it happened tonight."

Manning admitted that the touchdown celebration was planned, but he pointed out that he was surprised his teammates actually performed it, while also saying in jest that he can't grab the ball because he has already lost his vertical leap and agility.

"We sort of joked about it during the week," Manning said. "I'm a little bit hurt by the fact that they could do that -- that they're kind of picking on me. I've lost my vertical leap. It's not there anymore. My side-to-side agility is not quite as quick."

After the record-setting performance, several football personalities congratulated Manning, including Broncos general manager John Elway, Dan Marino, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Favre, who expressed no doubt that the 38-year-old QB will break his record this season.

"I want to say congratulations for breaking the touchdown record," Favre said via ESPN. "I'm not surprised. You've been a wonderful player and I've enjoyed watching you play. I've enjoyed competing against you. I wish you great success for the rest of the season and the rest of your career."
