Viewers have smashed the sequel to the 2002 hit movie "Drumline" about a Harlem street drummer who joined the band at an Atlanta university.

"Drumline: A New Beat" premiered on VH1, 12 years after the first movie, on Monday.

According to the director, the female lead character and gay love story in the second movie plot set it apart from the original.

"The story will be different because it's about a girl, a female coming into this world that many people think of as being more male driven, and trying to get respect," Billie Woodruff told The Wrap.

The new movie stars Alexandra Shipp as Danielle "Dani" Raymond. Dani is a Brooklyn-native filled with so much drive that she goes against her parents and enrolls in the (fictional) historically black college A&T in order to fulfill her dream of becoming the school's first female drum section leader.

"We have new routines and the new things that have evolved in the world of drumlines and the performances," Woodruff said.

The original "Drumline" was based on the life story of music producer Dallas Austin and starred Nick Cannon, Zoe Saldana and Orlando Jones.

Cannon served as an executive producer for the sequel, alongside some of the people who produced the first film. He also appeared in the film as a totally new character.

The second movie brings in new faces. Former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett and newcomer Rome Flynn, are in the film.

After Monday night's premiere, viewers took to Twitter with the trending hashtag #Drumline2. Well after the movie ended, viewers expressed how bad they thought the movie was.

@RevrendDoctor tweeted, "Dear @VH1 and makers of #Drumline2: please don't mistake our watching this as us wanting a #Drumline3. We were bored and wanted family time."

@Young_Old_Skool tweeted, "Bet they filmed #drumline2 with the iPhone 6 bruh."

@ThewsWithABowTie rebuked negative comments, tweeting, "What people have to realize is that #drumline2 is not really about band it's about love..."
