In the latest episode of Season 5 on AMC's "The Walking Dead," Carol and Daryl's companionship serves as the main storyline with flashbacks filling in gaps in time amongst the survivors.

Carol, after being kicked out of the group by Rick, struggled to find any kind of help or friendship. Flashback sequences show her extreme loneliness, crying in a car parked on the side of the road or boarding herself into a lawyer's office. Carol's only interaction with anyone was the zombies hell-bent on killing her.

As her storyline jumps back and forth between past and present, the horrors she experienced earlier make her lose hope that anyone will survive the walkers.

As Carol and Daryl drive together trying to get to Beth in a car, their vehicle runs out of gas, and they are forced to continue on foot. The two manage to kill their way into a building, which Carol realizes was one of the shelters she would escape to when she was in an abusive relationship with Ed.

Daryl, while he doesn't bother Carol with questions about her past, helps her to forget with small gestures such as killing and burning the walkers that Carol knew as people at the shelter. They comfort and take care of each other while trying to survive.

When the pair spot a hospital van and decide to ransack it for supplies, they run into Beth's friend Noah, who takes their weapons and leaves. Now vulnerable, a swarm of zombies attacks them and Carol and Daryl are forced to drive the van over a nearby edge, luring the zombies to do the same and fall to their death.

After the van crash, Carol's shoulder is injured as they press on toward Beth. When they find another walker near Noah, Daryl retaliates for stealing their things earlier, leaving him pinned under a bookshelf with zombies approaching. However, Carol pleads not to let him die, and Daryl complies by killing the walker and lifting the heavy shelf off of Noah.

Following their escape from immediate danger, the duo realize that Noah knows Beth, and they continue together toward the hospital.

"The Walking Dead" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
