Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced that Colt McCoy will start at quarterback in favor of Robert Griffin III in their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Griffin has started in five games this season, but has led the Redskins to just one victory in those matches. Gruden is not putting all the blame on his struggling quarterback, but he felt Griffin III needs more time to learn the system.

"Robert has done some good things at quarterback, but I just think he needs a little bit more time in this system with the verbiage and the plays to sit back, take a step back and learn, and when he gets back in there he'll be a lot more decisive, hopefully, and ready to roll," Gruden said via ESPN.

Gruden, whose team is currently fourth in the National Football Conference East standings with their 3-8 record, felt that McCoy would put them in a better position to win against the Colts on Sunday.

In two games, McCoy completed 36-of-42 passes for 427 yards with one touchdown and one interception, leading the Redskins to close wins against the Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys.

When asked if McCoy will be their starter for the remainder of the season, Gruden said that he will make a decision on a game-to-game basis, but for now, Griffin will be their No. 2 quarterback and Kirk Cousins will be their No. 3.

"We're focused in on Indianapolis, and we're going to play with the Colts and see how it goes," Gruden added. "I expect Colt to prepare like a pro, I expect Robert to prepare like a pro, and I figure both of them will be ready to play, and they have to be ready to play."

And for Griffin to regain his starting spot, Gruden said that the 24-year-old quarterback should become more confident and prove that he deserves to be their No. 1 quarterback.

"He's just got to have the confidence and swagger that made him who he is," Gruden said. "That comes with time. It's not easy for these young quarterbacks. Not too long ago, you didn't even think about playing a rookie quarterback until he was three years in, sitting on the bench, and then you bring him in slowly."
