Two deputies of the Dominican Republic dominant party criticized United States ambassador James W. Brewster for calling for the removal of corruption in the island country, saying it was the "Achilles heel" for the U.S.

The two men from the Dominican Liberation Party, or the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, slammed Brewster on Thursday for his comments against their country.

Lupe Núñez of the PLD said the Dominican Republic is no different than other countries in its efforts to deal with problems of corruption and immigration. He defended Congress' role in helping to stamp out corruption, where legislators have passed several laws on the issue.

PLD senator José María Sosa said Brewster's comments made Wednesday were trying "to create conflict" in his country. "Although the Ambassador wants to portray himself as kind to Dominican society, what I believe is that he wants to create conflict in Dominican society," Sosa said.

He added it's dangerous to encourage individuals to reveal names of corrupted officials, as Brewster suggested, because in his opinion it raises the risk of slandering a person. Sosa then asked Brewster to disclose the names of corrupt people in his own country, further explaining that "there are many who do mischief."

Brewster urged the business sector to deal with many fundamental issues like education, public safety as well as corruption and bribery, daring citizens to step forward with any information. He said the country is going through a major moment in its history.

"It's time for the global transition. Are you ready?" Brewster said. "We are in a time of global transition but the transition can be positive or devastating.

"Demand more of your government, and of yourself," the U.S. ambassador continued, as he spoke in Santo Domingo. "Create conditions that allow Dominican industries [to] compete internationally and for society to prosper."
