The third season of Ryan Murphy's FX hit mini-series, "American Horror Story" returned last night, subtitled "Coven." The new season will heavily focus on the themes of feminism, witchcraft and magic.

Murphy talks about the music featured in "Coven." "We use a lot of Stevie Nicks music this year so I called Stevie Nicks and said, 'Do you want to be a part of this show?' And she said, 'Yeah, I'd love to.' So it's like, things that shouldn't be together that are and I love that," says the series creator.

In return, Murphy had said on his Twitter, "Thank you Ms. Stevie Nicks for letting us use your music in COVEN! You rock and I love you" back in September.

Ryan Murphy says he is almost finished with Season 3, and he plans to insert some hints and reveal the Season 4 premise and location in the last scene of "Coven." He has done this before in previous seasons of the series, as well: Vivian Harmon spent time in a mental institution toward the end of Season 1, subtitled as "L.A. Murder House," and it turned out to be a clue for the electroshock therapy of Season 2, "Asylum." "Asylum" also had some references to the themes and setting of "Coven."

"Right now I'm writing episode 9 or 10 so I will definitely get that in. I always thought it would be cool to have the season end and the last image will be this is what the next season is about and you'll get the title," Murphy says.

The series creator also talks about how the season 3 is less dark, and the season 4 will go back to dark - "I think that I did it on purpose because last year it was about mental institutions and it was very dark and had to be. We told the truth about that and it was a very honored season but many of the actors said, 'Come on, can I just wear a dress and smoke a cigarette and say a joke now and again?' I always like to do the opposite. Next year, I'm sure it will be so dark that no one will watch it. I don't know."

Cast member Lily Rabe talks about how "American Horror Story: Coven" is about female empowerment.

"Do you like witches? Do you like women? Watching women? There's a lot of amazing women on this show," she says. "I think if you like, I dunno, to me, I'm so obsessed personally obsessed with everything to do with magic and witches and all of that, so I think it's just delicious and rich and also, it's not good or bad, it's everything - everything in between, good and evil, as well."

Taissa Farmiga, another cast member, adds, "It's still dark and strange but it's a bit more humorous and fabulous and wicked. It's just going to be really fun. It's a bunch of wonderful female leads. We do have our couple of males coming in, but it's just a completely different season and it's about female empowerment and it's fun."

"American Horror Story: Coven" stars Taissa Farmiga, Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and the newcomer Angela Bassett. The new series is set to premiere on FX on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. EDT.
