Oscar-nominated and Alma Award-winning actress Salma Hayek has portrayed the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, a mythological creature disguised as a stripper in Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn," a vampire/muse in "Dogma," and Alec Baldwin's love interest on "30 Rock," among many other roles.

Now she's playing a prostitute-turned-FBI informant who is fending off Japanese mobsters and an army of assassins in her apartment in the upcoming 2015 film, "Everly."

Set in one location that eventually becomes a legit war zone, director Joe Lynch's upcoming bloody action film is also considered to be "an ode to Asian cinema and the action classic 'Die Hard.'"

"I have always loved self-contained siege films like Die Hard,'' Lynch told USA Today in an earlier interview. "For me, that was the best challenge, to create a visceral claustrophobia."

In "Everly," Hayek's dangerous ex, a Yakuza boss, threatens her that she won't leave the building alive, but she takes matters into her own hands. Meanwhile, she is trying to save her estranged mother and daughter.

"You've never seen me like this before," said Hayek of the film. "And I love it. Because you really see a transformation in this character that's noticeable and shocking. I become a badass.''

In real life, Hayek is also a 'badass' mother on a mission, but without the guns blazing. The 48-year-old Mexican actress has one daughter, 7-year-old Valentina Paloma Pinault with her 52-year-old French billionaire husband, Francois-Henri Pinault (whom she wed on Valentine's Day 2009 in Paris.)

Dubbed a "high-concept revenge flick with ultra-violence" as it takes place entirely in one apartment, "Everly" has also put Hayek back into the spotlight and in a leading role. This move has also been considered "a career reinvention" on behalf of the "Grown Ups 2" and "Desperado" star.

"She starts out in one state of mind," added Lynch. "And through the course of one night, she sort of rises out of ashes as she becomes stronger and stronger."

Newcomer Yale Hannon wrote the script for "Everly," which was on the Hollywood Black List of most liked scripts in 2010 and was produced by Radius-TWC, who will distribute it using a multi-platform strategy, according to Screenrant.

In addition to Hayek, "Everly" also stars Togo Igawa and Masashi Fujimoto.

"Everly's" trailer was originally shown at Comic-Con 2014, where Lynch noted that the film was shot "chronologically so that the room could be seen to degrade and become battle-worn in the same way that Hayek's character does," Screenrant added.

Earlier this year, "Everly" premiered at Fantastic Fest and reportedly received many positive reviews. Lynch's past films include LARPing comedy 'Knights of Badassdom' and a comic book short called "Venom: Truth in Journalism."
