The two best teams in baseball this season are trying to figure out which is the single best team, but so far everyone is quite even.

The Boston Red Sox escaped with a victory in Game 4 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis last night to even the series at 2-2. In the best-of-seven series, one team will be facing elimination after tonight's important Game 5. Game 6 -- which will now be necessary -- will take place back at Fenway Park after a day off tomorrow.

Heading into tonight, Boston will look to build from the momentum gained yesterday when Jonny Gomes became the unlikely hero on the road. After a back injury sidelined Shane Victorino, Gomes stepped up and smacked a 3-run shot that ended up being the decisive blow for St. Louis. Considering that Gomes was 0-for-9 heading into last night's matchup, it would be safe to assume that nobody expected much from him.

"During batting practice, when I met with Shane today, he said, 'Yeah, put me in there. I'll find a way to get ready to start the game,'" Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "As we went through the other work, it became obvious he wasn't capable. And you know what? It turns out that his replacement is the difference in this one tonight."

The Red Sox also enjoyed yet another successful game at the plate for David Ortiz. The DH-turned-first-baseman for the NL portion of the series had three hits last night and is 8-for-11 in the series. According to ESPN, Ortiz needs a hit in his first at-bat of Game 5 to tie the individual record for the highest batting average in a player's first 40 career World Series at-bats.

On the other side, Cards catcher Yadier Molina extended his World Series hitting streak to seven games in losing fashion. The Cards, still winners of 2 of the last 3 games, had RBIs from Carlos Beltran and Matt Carpenter. Carpenter was the only member of the Cards to have multiple hits on the day.

Both squads will continue the series tonight at Busch Stadium for an 8:07 p.m. ET start.
