The next game in the Call of Duty series went on sale this week and video game enthusiasts combined to spend $1 billion on the first-person shooter game.

The Call of Duty: Ghosts video game suddenly emerged -- although unexpectedly -- as one of the top options on the shelves for gamers. The most recent game that had a great deal of success was Grand Theft Auto 5, which reportedly raked in around the same amount of money upon its release.

In a review of the game on IGN, Scott Lowe wrote that Call of Duty: Ghosts is great in that it maintains the "fast, fluid gameplay that has made the series famous" but said there are still improvements to make.

"Call of Duty: Ghosts isn't a reinvention of the franchise, but proves there's still room for innovation within its existing formula," he wrote. "Though at the risk of overcomplicating things at times, its robust multiplayer gameplay, surprisingly fun co-op modes, and lengthy, challenging, and varied campaign makes Ghosts one of the best Call of Duty games to date."

According to his review, the comments he made were based on his experiences playing the game on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Playstation 4. Another reason for the game's success is that it will be the first Call of Duty game to be released on the next generation game consoles, the Xbox One and PS4. Considering how quickly the game piled up $1 billion in sales, we can expect the Call of Duty series to remain one of the top game series in the years to come.
