Even though it had a song made for it by Nick Lachey and drove up sales by several million dollars, Wendy's has decided to stop their now-infamous pretzel bun. But the question remains: why?

According to Entrepreneur.com, the pretzel bun was only meant to be a limited time offering in the first place. "Bringing new food ideas to our customers attracts them into our restaurants," said Wendy's representative Denny Lynch.  "We have introduced three unique break carriers this year - multi-grain flatbread, pretzel, and now brioche. These breads elevate the quality of our sandwich offerings." The brioche bun can already be found in restaurants, but hasn't yet received the buzz of the pretzel bun.

Wendy's pretzel bun sparked a new trend in pretzel buns, with fast-food chains like Sonic, Hardee's and Carl's Jr. all offering their own versions of the pretzel bun...which is why, according to The Motley Fool, Wendy's decision to discontinue the pretzel bun is shocking, and quite possibly counter-productive.

The Fool reports that Wendy's seems to be implementing changes that have proven not to work -- such as a breakfast menu and flatbread sandwiches -- and get rid of changes that do work (such as the pretzel bun). "Maybe Wendy's new slogan should be "If it is broke, don't fix it, but if it is fixed, break it again," " The Fool writes.
