Google's Android 5.0 Lollipop update release date has been taking a particularly long time to come to major OEM devices and carriers in the U.S. But while you'd think the cult OnePlus One smartphone would have already rolled out its Android L update, it hasn't. That's changing soon, and OnePlus is putting weight behind its promises.

As much as eager Android Lollipop fans are getting impatient with big companies like Samsung, HTC, AT&T, Verizon and others, they do have a lot of work to do to update a lot of devices. OnePlus, maker of the cult Android hit, the OnePlus One, has similarly gone over deadline for its one-device Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Now OnePlus is promising a firm release date for the official OTA update for the OnePlus One, and the company has decided to make something of a promotion out of its Lollipop release date promises.

The company says its Android Lollipop update, for both operating systems in the OnePlus One, will be rolling out OTA before the end of March. Specifically, the CyanogenMod "CM 12S" OTA update has a release date of March 30, but the company is hinting Android L will be rolling out before that time.

For OnePlus One's OxygenOS doppelganger, OnePlus said in its customer forum on Tuesday, "The official release of our own Lollipop-based ROM will be available for download on or before March 27, 2015."

That's some straight shooting from OnePlus, but it gets better.

"To show you how serious we are about this commitment to our community," stated OnePlus's forum administrator Brandon H, "we are prepared to put our money where our mouth is."

"If we miss either one of these deadlines, we will give away five (5) 64GB OnePlus One devices to our fans"

Fans of the OnePlus One seeking a free device need to reply to the company's announcement thread to be eligible -- but that assumes the company misses its latest deadline, which doesn't seem likely.

OnePlus explained the delay to impatient customers who want their Lollipop in the same announcement, mentioning an "unforeseen OS signing issue" that was recently resolved, Android Lollipop stability issues with the OnePlus One's camera module, and several other drivers that needed to be upgraded to work with Google's new OS.

"Admittedly, it took a little more time than we had planned, but we only release updates that we are proud of; that means refusing to take shortcuts or deliver sub-par experiences," stated OnePlus's representative.
