The New England Patriots have been relatively quiet this offseason.

Bill Belichick has wisely stayed away from "mega-deal" players such as Ndamukong Suh in order to save salary cap space.

Without a doubt, the Patriots' biggest and best addition this offseason was re-signing safety Devin McCourty to a five-year, $47 million contract. McCourty isn't a very physical player, but he's a great cover safety who the Patriots need and will benefit from having in their secondary.

Now, on to the losses.

Obviously, Darrelle Revis is the biggest name no longer on the Patriots' roster. His loss will be felt, but one can't blame New England for letting him walk. The New York Jets signed Revis to a five-year contract with $39 million guaranteed. As good as Revis is, the Patriots just can't afford to spend that much money on one cornerback while ignoring other holes.

On the other side, the Patriots can be held accountable for not re-signing Vince Wilfork and Brandon Browner.

The loss of Vince Wilfork is inexcusable. Wilfork has guided the Patriots defense to four Super Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl victories since 2004. Wilfork was the defensive captain for a long time for the Patriots providing great leadership when it mattered most. Wilfork will end up in the Patriots Hall of Fame one day, maybe even the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Wilfork isn't very effective at rushing the quarterback, having zero sacks the last two seasons, but he is one of the best defensive tackles in the game today. His presence at the line of scrimmage is hard to replace. In 2013, Wilfork played just four games and the Patriots' rush defense ranked 30th overall without him. In 2014, Wilfork played every game and New England's rush defense finished No. 9 in the NFL. It's pretty hard to argue with that big of an impact. Wilfork constantly drew double teams at the line of scrimmage for the Patriots, and that's all gone now.

And then, there's Brandon Browner. Browner was a terrific signing by the Patriots last offseason, and he paid off big time for the team last year helping them win the Super Bowl over the Seattle Seahawks. Browner isn't an extremely gifted cover corner, but he's a big physical player that every team needs. With the Patriots choosing not to break the bank (rightfully so) on Revis, there's no reason they couldn't have brought Browner back.

Compared to last season, the Patriots are now without their two best cornerbacks and best defensive tackle. Conventional wisdom tells us that Belichick has a plan. He's usually playing chess while others are playing checkers, but losing this many key defensive players could be too much to overcome.
