Julian Fellowes, "Downton Abbey" creator and writer, announced alongside ITV and executive director Gareth Neame that "Downton Abbey" will end after Season 6.

Following the audible international gasp of the show's fans, Fellowes and Neame put forward the possibility of spin offs. One could involve the Dowager Countess.

Played by the fantastic Dame Maggie Smith, the Dowager Countess is one of the most beloved "Downton Abbey" characters and it could be she will make an appearance in the upcoming NBC show "The Gilded Age."

According to the Mail on Sunday, Fellowes suggested the possibility that a younger Dowager Countess could make an appearance in the show beckoned as the "American Downton Abbey."

Set in late 19th Century New York City, "The Gilded Age" will follow the lives of wealthy robber barons of the time, such as John D. Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt, among many others. Fellowes, who is also writing this show, said a younger Dowager Countess could make an appearance alongside her young son and maybe Cora (Lady Grantham) could also be on the show.

"Robert Grantham would be in his early teens, Cora would be a child. A young Violet could make an appearance," Fellowes said.

"We'll have to see," he added tentatively, as the show has barely gotten off the ground. Fellowes has asked for a month off after work on "Downton Abbey" is over to begin working on "The Gilded Age." However, NBC is excited about the show.

"One of the Vanderbilt mansions is a front-runner. Julian wants a month off after finishing Downton, but then it is full steam ahead," sources set about some potential sets for the new show.

After announcing the end of "Downton Abbey," Fellowes spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about his thoughts on the new show.

"There's always an assumption that it's impossible to make lightning strike twice in the same place. But I'm looking forward to it, and I think it'll be quite different," he said.

The possibility of other spin offs remain, as Fellowes and Neame had hinted at it previously, and Radio Times took the opportunity of throwing some out there. Some include the a spin off focused on an older baby George, Sybbie and Marigold set in 1939 right before the Second World War.

Another focused on the possibility of show in which Bates and Anna open a hotel.
