Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the "Blade Runner" sequel.

The actor is in final negotiations to star alongside Harrison Ford, who will reprise his iconic role Rick Deckard. Alcon Entertainment is producing the film and Denis Villeneuve will direct the film. Villeneuve is known for "Prisoners," "Enemy," "Incendies" and the upcoming "Sicario."

The movie has already been written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green based on an idea by Fancher. Ridley Scott will serve as executive producer on the new film.

According to sources the film will take place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original, which centered on a man (Ford) working as a police operative who is tasked with chasing down machines called replicants. The film will start production in the summer of 2016.

Gosling has been promoting his new film, "Lost River," which opened in theaters last weekend. The actor is known for his work on "Half Nelson," "Gangster Squad" and "Blue Valentine." He recently joined "The Haunted Mansion," which will be directed by Guillermo del Toro. The actor will next be seen in Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" opposite Russell Crowe, as well as Terrence Malick's recently titled "Weightless." He is currently in production for "The Big Shorts" which also stars Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Steve Carrell.

Alcon acquired the rights for "Blade Runner" in 2011 with the intentions of making a prequel and a sequel to the original cult classic. The film will be produced by Bud Yorkin and with Alcon co-founders Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will also produce.

"Blade Runner" was released in 1982 and was a huge flop when it hit theaters. However, years after its release the movie became a huge cult classic and was re-edited multiple times. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.
