A 21-year-old Los Angeles fashion designer and model filed a $4 million federal civil rights lawsuit against the Las Vegas Police Department and one of its officers for excessive force.

In the lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday, Ariana Mason states that she suffered two broken teeth and several facial lacerations that required 26 stitches during an arrest in Las Vegas last summer, reports The Associated Press.

According to Mason, she was arrested around 3 a.m. on Aug. 16, 2014 outside of the 1 OAK Nightclub at the Mirage Hotel and Casino. Although she was only 20 years old at the time, she said that she consumed two drinks at the club before the altercation.

Surveillance video of the incident shows police were trying to break up fights that had broken out in the hotel lobby near the club. However, in the video, Las Vegas Metro Police Officer Shawn Izzo is seen grabbing Mason from behind and taking her down to the ground.

At one point, Mason starts throwing punches at the officer, who ends up fighting back. She is brought down to the ground again and handcuffed. At another point, Izzo appears to put Mason in a chokehold.

While in custody, an officer presses her against a marble and glass table. She then hit her head on the table and blacked out.

"I feel as if the way he reacted was unnecessary. I feel he escalated the situation," said the young African American woman during a recent news conference, reports ABC 7.

Records show that Mason was one of two people arrested on felony battery on a police officer charges in the incident. Six others were arrested on misdemeanor charges. Mason's charges were later dropped by prosecutors.

"I just feel as if the color of my skin was different, this wouldn't have happened to me," Mason told reporters.
