Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was named as the lead suspect in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday, multiple reports confirmed.

MMA Junkie reported on Sunday that the Albuquerque Police Department is searching for Jones for questioning in the hit-and-run accident, which involved a 25-year-old pregnant woman, who was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Tanner Tixier then confirmed to ESPN on Monday that one police officer, who was off-duty on Sunday, saw Jones leaving the scene of the incident on foot.

Witnesses also saw Jones went out of the car and returned to get cash inside the vehicle before running out from the incident site. Tixier also confirmed that the car was not Jones' own vehicle and was just a rental. Officers also found marijuana pipe inside the rented car.

Officers also confirmed they tried to contact Jones, who moved to Albuquerque to have easier access to the Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA gym. However, authorities failed to get in touch with the mixed martial arts superstar.

According to reports, the Albuquerque Police Department is not planning to issue warrant of arrest and will continue to summon Jones to determine his involvement in the accident.

Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik is facing misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and will be responsible for damages and medical bills of the pregnant woman involved in the accident.

Jones, who is considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, is scheduled to fight against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rumors suggested that fight could be could be called off, but Johnson's camp said that they have not been informed about possible changes.

UFC issued a statement, saying that they are gathering information about the incident and will issue another statement once they are done with the investigation.

"We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident," UFC said in a statement. "We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available."

Jones was also involved in another accident in May 2012. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after his vehicle crashed into a telephone pole in New York. He pleaded guilty to the charges against him, but he avoided jail time.
