The Oklahoma City Thunder will have a new coach in the 2015-16 NBA season and reports revealed that Florida Gators coach Billy Donovan will likely be at the helm.

NBA insider Marc Stein of ESPN reported that the Thunder have officially reached out to Donovan about their coaching vacancy a week after the team parted ways with Scott Brooks, who coached the team for seven seasons.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti reportedly opened discussion with Donovan about the possibility of coaching the Thunder next season. Multiple league executives are convinced Donovan is the strongest candidate to take the position of Brooks, who helped the Thunder reach the Western Conference Finals three times in seven seasons.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who has a close relationship with Donovan, recently said the Florida Gators coach is very interested in making a jump to the NBA despite being in contract with the Gators until 2020, especially after witnessing the success of Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens.

Sources indicated that one possible hurdle is Donovan's deep ties with the university and the community as he has coached in Florida since 1996, leading the Gators to back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007.

However, recent reports stressed the 49-year-old is determined to coach in the NBA. Florida failed to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time since 1998. Donovan has reportedly "grown weary" of the college recruitment process, which is one of the main reasons why he is very interested in moving to the big league.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Donovan is planning to talk to Thunder's key players like Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook before agreeing to a deal, but it is unclear at this point if the meeting will take place in the coming days.

Durant, who expressed sadness over the firing of Brooks last week, is also aware of the ongoing talks between his team and Donovan. Wojnarowski revealed that Durant talked to players who played under Donovan at the University of Florida, and the Thunder superstar became high on Donovan after reaching out to former Gators.
