Miguel Cotto confirmed that there is already a verbal agreement about his showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, which will likely take place in September.

Cotto is scheduled to defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title against Daniel Geale on June 6 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. And if he wins, Cotto admitted to Fighthype that he will likely face Alvarez, who is scheduled to fight again in September.

"We believe after this fight, we have a verbal agreement with HBO, verbal agreement with Golden Boy Promotions, but we'll see what happens after this fight," Cotto said of facing Alvarez.

Cotto and Alvarez were linked to a showdown earlier this year, but talks for the bout did not come to fruition as the camp of the Puerto Rican champion failed to agree to take the fight before the deadline set by the opposing camp.

Alvarez eventually decided to face James Kirkland. He scored an impressive victory as he knocked Kirkland out in the third round of the fight, which boosted his stock anew and moved him a step closer to getting a shot against Cotto.

But for the fight to happen, Cotto needs to get past Geale next month. Cotto has not fought since winning the title against Sergio Martinez in June last year, but he declared that he is in a good shape and is focused on the task at hand, not on talks about his fight against Alvarez.

"It's not difficult to get back in after this long stretch. I've been focused on my work," Cotto said via Boxing Insider. "I have gained more knowledge during my time off in order to get myself ready to fight again. Daniel Geale is the next chapter in my career. After I get through him, I can talk about what comes next."

Gaby Peñagarícano, Cotto's legal adviser, confirmed that they sat down with Golden Boy Promotions about the Cotto-Alvarez bout, but he insisted that there is no date set for the fight and that the Puerto Rican boxing icon is concentrating on his preparation for Geale.

"We have no date yet for Miguel Cotto v Canelo Alvarez as we are not going to work on until it after June 6," Peñagarícano told World Boxing News. "For now, Daniel Geale is the only fight we are concentrating on and we are not thinking of anything other than that fight."

Cotto, who holds a 39-4 record with 32 knockouts, is also being linked to a fight against WBC middleweight champion mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin, but the unbeaten world champion will reportedly step aside and just face the winner of the Cotto-Alvarez fight.
