TV personality and newly announced presidential hopeful Donald Trump has described his criticism of the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on same-sex unions as support for "traditional marriage" -- a phrase that invited some questioning from CNN host Jake Tapper, Salon reported.

"What's traditional about being married three times?" Tapper asked the real-estate mogul in an interview on Sunday, evoking Trump's unions with Ivana Zelníčková (1977-1992), Marla Maples (1993-1999) and Melania Knauss (since 2005) after Trump affirmed that his views on gay marriage were no longer "evolving."

"A lesbian who's married or a gay man who's married" would have "a very good point" if they criticized his marital track record, the "Apprentice" star admitted, according to Raw Story.

"But I've been a very hard-working person, and I have a great marriage and a great wife now," Trump explained. "My (first) two wives were very good, but I was working -- maybe like you -- 22 hours a day."

"I'm not asking you to explain your divorces," the "State of the Nation" host cautioned.

"I know," Trump replied. "I blame myself; my business was just so powerful to me, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing."

The 69-year insisted, though, he wanted marriage to be limited to unions between one man and one woman; he quickly cut Tapper off when the CNN anchor inquired as to how he would explain that view to a gay man or lesbian.

"I really don't say anything," he shrugged. "I'm just -- Jake, I'm for traditional marriage."

Many of Trump's competitors for the Republican nomination in the 2016 White House race -- including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- last week also decried the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage across the United States, USA Today noted.

In a statement, Bush similarly evoked his support for "traditional marriage"; the son of former President George H.W. Bush and brother of former President George W. Bush, who wed his Mexican-born wife, Columba, in 1974, has tied the knot just once, however.
