The New York Daily News is reporting that Sonia Manzano aka "Maria," who has been on the iconic show "Sesame Street" for 44 years will not be returning. This announcement was made during the American Library Association Annual Conference. The library also has tweeted the announcement below:

Manzano has earned two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Performer in a children's Series and has won 15 Emmy Awards for her writing since she began working on the show.

US Magazine is reporting that Manzano started her role as Maria in 1971 as teenage Maria, who earned her first job in the library.

People on Twitter expressed their sadness. One tweet stated in Spanish: "You'll be missed on SS!!. I would love to see you on season 50 to commemorate the show!! kisses from Spain!"

Manzano replied back to the tweet saying: "Maybe I'll go back for 50th anniversary and make a guest appearance! Gracias!"

In an interview with Vox, she wrote her own personal marriage and pregnancy into the show. She stated: "I was able to use things that really happened to me into scripts by breaking complex emotions like love, marriage, childbirth into something a 4-year old could understand."

In 1995, she joined then First Lady Hilliary Clinton in a discussion about television in childhood development.

Manzano's work in television has been described as a positive influence and a positive representation of ethnic diversity on television.
