After witnessing the death of his new bride and unborn child in Season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries," it's safe to say that Alaric (Matthew Davis) will suffer from a lot of grief and pain when the series returns in the fall.

While speaking with Zap2It.com, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that she warned Davis about the tragedy and devastation that his character would face in the Season 6 finale.

"I told him we were doing that and he just looked at me and said 'That's so mean'... and I was like, I know and I can't wait to see you do it," said Plec at San Diego Comic-Con. "I have this thing with Matt Davis. He's a good buddy of mine, a true good friend of mine. I really like to push him as an actor."

Plec added that Alaric will face a tough journey as he tries to recover from the devastating loss of his pregnant new wife, who was murdered on their wedding day.

"This is not an easy transition for him. He's already been through so much and now he's going through this. This is about as horrible and despicable a thing that could happen," she said. "He's not going to recover so easily. He's going to explore his grief in some unconventional ways involving a lot of booze and some secret desires that involve psychics and witches to try to contact the dead and God knows what else."

Along with fans, Plec said that she is also rooting for Alaric to pull through and snap back from the tragedy.

"I like to put him in situations that are really terrible because he forces him to dig as deep as he can. I love that. I love messing with Alaric," Plec said. "We'll be rooting for him to come out to the other side."

It has also been revealed that "The Vampire Diaries" has cast several new additions to the show, in light of Nina Dobrev's departure last season, reports Entertainment Weekly.

"Powers" star Justice Leak will play Malcolm, a clean-cut, older heretic who doesn't take no for an answer. Although Malcolm is seen as the "golden child" in his small family, he also has a sneering, aloof side. He also displays the air of somebody who's been alive a very long time and has no fear of death. Fans can look forward to meeting him in the first episode of the upcoming season.

Jaiden Kaine from "Zoo" has also been cast as a scary, solemn and dangerous man named Beau, who became mute after his vocal cords were slashed, leaving him with permanent throat damage. He also possesses supernatural powers and an unbreakable loyalty to his heretic family. Viewers will also meet Beau in the Season 7 premiere.

Both "The Mentalist" actor Tim Kang and Todd Lasance of "Home and Away" will join the CW series in episode 3 as Oscar and Julian, respectively. Oscar is a laid back stoner who has been keeping his connection to the Salvatores under wraps. However, his life will take a drastic turn when a supernatural intervention turns him into a feral killer.

According to EW, Lasance's character is described as "a feared and storied immortal with a reputation for excelling in earthly pleasures. Julian is pure charisma or pure creep, depending on whom you ask. The one thing he fears is anonymity, an unlikely outcome given that he's perpetually on the run, leaving chaos in his wake, and attracting even more dangerous followers."
