New York Knicks legend Walt Frazier believes it will not take too long before superstar Carmelo Anthony asks for a trade because of the way things are shaping up in the Big Apple.

Frazier believes Anthony did not like the way their offseason ended up after the Knicks failed to sign a big-name free agent, who could help the former Syracuse standout ease some pressure on his shoulders in the upcoming season.

"I'm sure Melo wasn't happy. His future is now," Frazier told ESPN New York. "You know, he's not getting younger. This is going to be a pivotal season for him to see really how he fits into the Knick plans and how this is going to go from here."

The Knicks, who had the second-worst record in the league last season at 17-65, tried to make a run at signing All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, but the former Portland Trail Blazer decided to sign with the San Antonio Spurs.

In turn, the Knicks signed free agents Robin Lopez, Arron Afflalo, Derrick Williams and Kyle O'Quinn. The Knicks also selected Kristaps Porzingis with their fourth pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Frazier said that the Knicks tried their best to improve their roster this summer, but were eventually forced to build the team without adding another superstar -- a formula that previously worked for some Eastern Conference teams over the past several seasons.

"I think they did the best they could with the hand they were dealt," Frazier said of the Knicks' offseason moves. "So they had an option: try to get superstars or try to build like Atlanta has done without superstars -- like Toronto, like Washington. Some teams in the Eastern Conference have had success with that."

Anthony, who averaged 24.2 points on top of 6.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in just 40 games last season, still has four years left on the five-year contract worth $124 million he signed last year.

The 12-year veteran, who was bothered by a knee injury last season, turned 31 years old in May. And for Frazier, the superstar forward will not be patient enough to wait for the Knicks to become a contender by developing the young pieces they acquired this summer.

"Will he ask out, you know what I mean, if he sees that this is not happening?" Frazier said. "Because right now the Knicks, it's going to be tough to make the playoffs. They are a few years away and Melo knows that his days are numbered, so stay tuned."
