Even though Nina Dobrev will not return to "The Vampire Diaries" this fall, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that there will still be a lot to look forward to in Season 7 as the Salvatore brothers get reacquainted with their long-lost mother.

As fans may recall, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan's (Paul Wesley) mother, Lily "Mama" Salvatore (Annie Wersching), was resurrected in the latter half of Season 6.

However, Lily did not come to Mystic Falls alone. She also brought along her heretic friends, who are vampires with witch powers. According to Plec, there will be conflict between Lily's new family and her biological sons in the upcoming season.

"Damon and Stefan are dealing with the fact that their mother, who essentially abandoned them, has shown up in their hometown" with "a group of people that she calls her new family and that she calls her children," Plec told Buddy TV. "It's emotionally incredibly frustrating," she added.

However, "it teaches them a lot about their relationship with each other, their relationship they always wanted with her, and then it puts them in a situation of, are they going to make amends with this woman or are they going to take her down?" Plec previewed.

Plec also teased that Alaric (Matthew Davis) will have a hard time in Season 7 following the loss of his new bride and unborn child in Season 6.

"He's not great in that way that he's making some clearly questionable decisions. He's dabbling in the occult in ways that maybe he shouldn't be," teased the showrunner. Alaric will also make a desperate attempt to reach his dead wife, but it won't be possible because the Other Side no longer exists.

When asked about Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon's friendship, Plec teased, "They really, really found a deep friendship with each other, which is surprising, considering how little respect they had for each other leading up to that situation."

"They still have that, but there's this underlying resentment on both sides," she added.

Meanwhile, the EP revealed Caroline (Candice Accola) will try to "regain control of her life."

Even though Stefan told Caroline he'd wait for her, "he's becoming harder and harder to resist."

"Caroline's going to go through a lot this season that I'm not even going to attempt to spoil but it's going to be a pretty massive, massive storyline that will be pretty bananas, but awesome," said Plec.
