With the Star Wars Episode 7 casting rumors flying around, the latest entry into the foray -- acclaimed character actor Gary Oldman -- has created a positive stir amongst the Star Wars community, with some fans calling Oldman's possible casting the "best news yet!"

According to Metro U.K., the acclaimed actor confirmed that even though nothing had been finalized, he's a strong contender for a role in the film. (Which role, exactly, still remains unclear, as JJ Abrams has yet to reveal which characters will be featured, save to confirm that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Kenny Baker have returned to reprise their roles as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and R2-D2 respectively.) "They've called. I'm more cynical about it now. I'll believe it when I'm on the plane home. The deal isn't done, but yeah, they've inquired. I mean Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, Batman and Star Wars -- bloody hell!"

Some Star Wars fans have taken to the blogs and message boards, and have called it the "best news yet" -- not for the least of reasons being that the actor brought a lot of gravitas to the aforementioned movies, and then some (personally, my favorite role of Oldman's is as Commissioner Gordon in the Christopher Nolan-directed series of Batman films).

According to The Guardian, Oldman's name is the latest high-profile name to be attached to the film. Other names include Zac Efron, Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, Michael Fassbender, Michael B. Jordan, Jesse Plemons of Breaking Bad, Chiwetel Ejiofor of 12 Years A Slave, Jack O'Connell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg.

In the event the deal with Star Wars doesn't pan out, you can be sure to catch Oldman in the upcoming revival of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, where he will play Dreyfus, the leader of the human resistance.

So... do you think Oldman will make a great addition to the Star Wars cast? Who are some of your "fantasy castings" for roles in the film? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
