Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton got into a fight with cornerback Josh Norman at the Panthers training camp on Monday.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera provided a brief explaination on why the scuffle ensued.

"What happened was Cam got stiff-armed in the helmet, and that's where that escalated. The big thing we have to understand is: 'Hey, you're going to get stiff-armed. You've just got to handle it," the coach said, as quoted by ESPN.

A video of events after the brawl was uploaded and posted on Twitter by Black & Blue Review, which gives updates specific to the Carolina Panthers.

In the video, it can be seen that the Panthers dived in to break the fight.

According to the Charlotte Observer Newton shouted, "Hit me like that again, I know something!" and "I bet you won't do it again."

Panthers' reactions

The Panthers quickly tried to end the feud before things got out of hand.

One of the players who responded was offensive tackle Nate Chandler.

"Your quarterback gets in a fight you don't want anyone, especially when his helmet's not on, taking a shot at him. It's our quarterback; we have to protect him," Chandler told the Observer.

Meanwhile, Center Ryan Kalil is not worried about what happened but he hopes that his team mates will still maintain "composure" when incidents like this happen.

"It's just a little training camp tiff. But those are the kind of guys you want on your team, guys that don't back down," Kalil said.

Newton focused as a leader

The tension between Newton and Norman may lead to some people questioning Newton's stand and leadership as the Panthers' quarterback. Rivera was quick to say that it is usually expected at camp, but he also admitted that he did not expect a fight involving a quarterback.

Still, the coach gave an assurance that Newton knows his duties.

"And the poignant moment, as far as I was concerned, was when I brought the team up he broke it down with the word family, which is what Cam was trying to express," Rivera said.
