The 2015 Teen Choice Awards happened on Aug. 16 and included a few surprises, emotional moments and huge sweeps.

Noticeably absent from the award show, hosted by Gina Rodriguez, actor and rapper Ludacris, and actor Josh Peck, were some of the biggest hit makers like Taylor Swift and One Direction, who were the nights biggest winners. Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas were also missed.

However, their absence had nothing to do with who took home a coveted surfboard, reported Variety.

One Direction, who dominated the night winning in eight categories, accepted their awards through a taped video. The group took home Male Hottie, Choice Music Group: Male, Choice Summer Music Star: Group, Choice Song: Group, Choice Summer Tour, Choice Party Song, Choice Love Song, and Choice Selfie Taker.

Taylor Swift followed with the second most wins after winning Choice Breakup Song, Choice Music Collaboration, Choice Summer Music Star: Female, and Choice Twit. Swift lost the Choice Female Artist award to friend and fellow singer Demi Lovato. Ed Sheeran took home the Choice Male Artist award.

Also dominating in music was pop group Fifth Harmony, who won Female Hottie, Choice Music Group: Female and Choice Summer Song. The group also had the honor of awarding the Candie's Style Icon Award to Britney Spears.

Perhaps one of the best moments came after "Furious 7" won Choice Movie: Action/Adventure, and Vin Diesel honored the late Paul Walker, who was awarded Choice Movie Actor: Action/Adventure, in his speech.

"I can't stand here and be rewarded like this without talking about somebody very, very, very important to us," he said. "One of the best blessings in our lives is the fact that we have the opportunity to call Pablo our brother. Paul Walker is here in spirit with us."

The actor also called out Walker's daughter, Meadow Walker, who was in attendance. Further honoring the film franchise was Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's win for Choice R&B/Hip Hop Song and Choice Song From a Movie or TV Show for his song "See You Again," which is a tribute to Walker.

The biggest winner in television was "Pretty Little Liars." According to Yahoo, the teen show took home Choice TV Drama, Choice TV Villain, Choice Summer TV Star: Female, won by Ashley Benson, Choice Summer TV Star: Male, for Tyler Blackburn, and Choice TV Actress: Drama, awarded to Lucy Hale.

"The Vampire Diaries" was the second winner in television with three wins. Nina Dobrev got emotional during her acceptance speech after winning Choice TV Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, reported Entertainment Weekly. The actress took the time to explain her departure from the series.

"The last few months have been a big change for me," she said. "Change. It's a scary word, or I used to think that, because it meant new beginnings. New beginnings with a future that was unknown. But change is necessary. Necessary for you to grow up and learn and to better yourself, because everything in life comes to an end."

Social media stars Bethany Mota and Cameron Dallas won Choice Web Stars, making it the second year Mota wins the awards.

Other winners included Ellen DeGeneres who won Best Comedian and Kendall Jenner for Choice Model. Social Media King and Queen went to Justin Bieber and Caitlyn Jenner.
