The U.S. Open has kicked off in Flushing, New York with Venus Williams defeating up-and-coming star Mónica Puig in the first round in three sets.

Puig is a young Puerto Rican, who is an up-and-coming star in the tennis world. This is her second United States open, and she is hoping that this won't be her last. During her short career, Puig accomplished a lot, most recently winning the WTA Rising Stars Invitational last year in Singapore. The 21-year-old Puig reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2013 but has now lost in the first round at her past three major tournaments.

Venus Williams is a pro, who has been around the tennis circuit for many years. Throughout her illustrious career, Williams has won the United States Open three times (in 2000 and 2001) and has won a number of other tournaments. Together, Williams sisters Venus and Serena have won the women's doubles championship 13 times and are considered to be the best doubles team to ever play the game.

When asked about Williams, Puig stated, "I'm always looking for the most difficult to play in the first round route. I want to measure myself against the best, I see it as an opportunity and a privilege to face the greatest tennis players in the world."

She went on to add, "When I heard about the duel, I was so excited to have this opportunity against and I'm ready to fight."

Now with the match result, Williams is moving on to the next round of the tournament, where she will await the winner of the other matches that are currently going on.

The U.S. Open runs from Aug. 31 until Sept. 13.
