Euroleague veteran Marcelo Huertas agreed to a one-year deal with Los Angeles Lakers for the 2015-2016 NBA season. Lakers approach its upcoming training camp with a player from overseas, who has a proven background in international play.

The accomplished playmaker adds valuable experience to a young roster that includes the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, D'Angelo Russell. The news was first reported by Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter.

According to Sports Illustrated, Huertas was part of the Brazil contingent in the 2012 Olympics, where he averaged 11.3 points and 6.0 assists in six games. His most impressive performance came in their quarterfinal loss to Argentina when he scored 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting with five three-pointers.

Huertas has also been at the helm of FC Barcelona for the past four seasons, leading the team to the Euroleague Final Four, three seasons in a row. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.5 assists for his team this season.

In an interview with Yahoo! Sports last April, the 32-year-old opened up about his potential contributions in the NBA. Aside from leadership off the bench, Huertas specified his ability to create shots for himself and his teammates.

"There's so much more space in the NBA," Huertas said. "It's not like Europe now, where you have one guy full-time in the paint. Space is harder to come by. One of my strengths is playing in the pick-and-roll, finding open guys and making shots in the mid-range game off the dribble."

He added, "I think that part is harder to find now, because you mostly have guys who get all the way to the hole, or they're three-point shooters. And if I'm open, and I can get my feet set, I'm going to make a lot of those kind of shots."

Synergy Sports Tech seconded the guard's talent with the pick-and-roll as they shared Huertas' impressive stats on their Twitter page. Huertas created 870 pick-and-roll points over 80 games in Barcelona, numbers that would have placed him "13th in NBA after adjusting for game length." The Brazilian's jump shooting ability was also highlighted after making 41% of his jumpers and catch-and-shoot attempts.

Aside from Russell, Huertas will be part of a backcourt that includes Jordan Clarkson, Lou Williams and Kobe Bryant.

A report from Lakers Nation said that while the veteran point guard has inked a one-year deal with the organization, there have been no reports whether his spot is guaranteed. Huertas is the 17th player with a contract with the Lakers.
