Fans of the popular mobile game "Angry Birds" will be delighted to know that an animated film based on the title is in the works. The movie hopes to finally reveal the real reason the birds are angry and bent on attacking the pigs in the game.

Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment hit the jackpot when it came out with the game "Angry Birds" in 2009 for the iOS. Since its release, it has been downloaded for more than three billion times in different mobile platforms including Android, Windows and Symbian.

The success lead the company to create a second version of the game with "Angry Birds 2," which enjoyed more than 20 million downloads since its release.

With many enamored at the popular game, it was just a matter of time before it piques the interest of a studio, and, finally, one gave in. In 2010, Screen Rant reported that the head of Rovio Entertainment began pitching the idea to different studios with Sony Pictures sealing the deal.

"Despicable Me" producer John Cohen is reportedly in the project to produce the animated movie with writer John Vitti tasked to pen the screenplay. Vitti is known for his work with "The Simpsons."

Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly will both be on board to direct the animated film, noted Entertainment Weekly.

While not too many details are known about the film at this point, Cohen teased that the movie's plot will answer the question Rovio often gets asked and that is, "Why are these birds so angry?"

"This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies," said the producer.

Kaytis revealed that all of the birds, including lead character Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, are suffering from anger-management issues and it only further ruffled their feathers when the pigs are near their nests.

Reilly stated that while the main characters are popular in the mobile game, their task is to give life and a backstory to these "icons."

Aside from Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Peter Dinklage and Hannibal Buress will all lend their voices for the characters in the movie.

To tease the fans of the mobile game, Rovio Entertainment has recently come out with three still images from the upcoming film.

The images, posted on Comicbook, showed the green pigs, Chuck and Red and the whole flock of angry birds in their habitat.

"Angry Birds" will hit theaters on May 20, 2016.
