World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman shared that a showdown between former champions Danny Garcia and Amir Khan may be staged to capture the sanctioning body's welterweight title once it is officially vacated.

With the undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. officially hanging his gloves, the WBC crown will eventually be declared as vacant, but Sulaiman is still waiting for "The Money's" confirmation, reported Boxing Scene.

However, if Mayweather, who recently came out of his 49th victory against former titlist Andre Berto on Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, ultimately gives his go signal for his titles to be passed on to other worthy boxers, an exciting possibility awaits the position. Sulaiman stated that the council's committee advised him to have the "two highest contenders" to have a showdown against one another to decide to whom the vacant crown rightfully belongs.

In this case, at the welterweight division, the council will be looking into a fight with its current number one and two boxers, the WBC Silver welterweight titleholder Amir Khan and the Puerto Rican-American fighter Danny Garcia.

Aside from Garcia and Khan, Jermell Charlo (no. 1) and John Jackson (no. 2) may also compete for the junior welterweight division, which Mayweather also holds, for now.

A chance for Khan to redeem himself

It is a great opportunity for Khan to get the WBC crown via this clash with Garcia.

First, it will bring him back to a world champion status, something that he had not aimed for the long time, as seen in his recent fights, per BoxRec.

Second, this is his chance to redeem himself of the 4th round stoppage loss, per a BBC report, he received from Garcia in 2012. Surely down the road, Khan would have dreamt of getting past this defeat by proving he could avenge himself against Garcia, and a welterweight title to gain is another thing to sweeten the deal.

Third, if ever Mayweather returns for his 50th fight next year, this is Khan's way of luring back Mayweather into fighting him, especially doing what "The Money" had specifically wanted him to do, which is to get that win against his 2012 tormentor.

"Once Amir Khan can get past Danny Garcia, then... you know, the fight would've happened," Mayweather told Showtime's Brian Custer, as quoted by a separate Boxing Scene article.

Fourth, a successful performance by "King Khan" will intensify the heat on the proposed 2016 Pacquiao-Khan fight mentioned in The Telegraph. This will also cement him as the more worthy opponent than Garcia, who is the clear choice for Filipino boxing icon's coach, Freddie Roach, per another Boxing Scene report.

Will Khan take this challenge and face Garcia again?
