The new Dell XPS 12 is primed to go against other premium 2-in-1 devices if the most recent leaks are anything to go by.

The Dell XPS 12 made waves when it was released in 2012. Its debut as a premium "phablet" marked the beginning of the 2-in-1 trend, but now the competition is tougher with a wide selection of thinner and more efficient fellow hybrids from all the different brands.

While the XPS 12 hasn't been remodelled since its premiere, it turns out Dell was just biding its time. Now, the new XPS 12 is due for launching within the year and the market can't wait for the new reimagining.

Leaked photos from the German website WinFuture offer a close look at the sleek and light new high-end device. With the 12.5-inch display and the detachable keyboard, the Dell XPS 12 looks quite similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro that has become the standard for tablet and laptop hybrids.

According to a report from Digital Trends, the upgraded features of Dell's new device include a 4K, thin-bezel Infinity Display and a keyboard dock as opposed to its predecessor's swivel frame design. Two keyboard options will be available: one designed for mobility with its thinner and lighter body and a second one that's heftier due to an extra USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 port and an HDMI port.

The specs revealed by Digital Trends point at a premium phablet for those looking for optimum performance with a standard 1080p screen while the 4k model will reportedly feature IGZO technology and show off 352 pixels per inch.

Under the hood, the XPS 12 is powered by Core M processors. Users may choose between 4GB or 8GB RAM options that are available, along with M.2 SATA solid state drives for storage and 30 watt-hours of battery capacity.

Other features include an active digitizer pen, an eight-megapixel rear camera, a five-megapixel front camera and support for both the Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C.

The details paint a picture of a premium device that looks to do well in the modern market that enjoys good 2-in-1 devices. Those who are interested in purchasing will only need to wait a few weeks for more information. Dell World 2015 is set to take place on Oct. 20-22, and the three-day event will be offering a look at the company's latest innovative devices as well as forums with key Dell executives and industry professionals.
