Divergent is an action adventure film with a PG-13 rating. Like most blockbusters these days, the movie has plenty of action and violence, as well as a few scenes depicting sexuality. It is an adaptation of the first novel in the dystopian thriller trilogy of Veronica Roth.

Directed by Neil Burger, the movie looks like your usual action thriller film, but it has a bit more to offer. Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor, the movie's screenwriters, deepened the novel's themes with by adding some unique and creative elements that were absent in the novel. They were able to create an inspiring conclusion by capitalizing on the story of Tris, the teenage heroine, without altering the ending.

Story

Divergent has a futuristic dystopian setting with five different groups each symbolizing a special virtue. The young adults are forced to choose between sticking around in their own group or transferring to another for as long as they live. Tris Prior, the movie's lead character, surprises everybody by making a different choice. To carry out their choice, however, her group has to go through an extremely difficult initiation procedure, including enduring severe physical and psychological tests that changed them.

The big reveal is that Tris has not told anyone that she is not fit to join any group because she is a Divergent, something which if known would lead to a certain death. On joining the group, she discovered that a group leader plans to annihilate all Divergents, leading her on a journey to liberate the people she cares for at the cost of her own annihilation.

Cast

The movie's cast includes Shailene Woodley as Tris, along with Ashley Judd, Theo James, Jai Coutney, Zoё Kravitz, Ray Stevenson, Ansel Elgort, Tony Goldwyn, Maggie Q, Miles Tiller, Kate Winslet and Mekhi Phifer.

Review

The action scenes in the first part of the movie, which include jumping on board a running train and fight scenes, will keep you excited but it starts to get a little boring in the second part when the fight scenes become routine. Nevertheless, Divergent will keep you interested with the story of its heroine savior, although less dramatic when compared to the Hunger Games movies. Both Shailene Woodley and Theo James have moving performances and fans of Veronica Roth will be satisfied with Burger's Divergent movie adaptation.
