"Star Trek Beyond" is expected to dominate IMAX screens upon its release next summer.

The film, which hits cinemas on July 22, 2016, will hit the large format worldwide as part of a continuing trend to put the biggest blockbusters into the format.

"Imax provides a one-of-a-kind movie going experience to audiences all over the world," said director Justin Lin according to Deadline. "I am excited to bring the newest journey into the 'Star Trek' universe to its screens."

The film industry has constantly been seeking out new ways to draw viewers back into the movie theaters as an alternative for television. Back in the 1960s, color became the phenomenon to differentiate the two media formats and there was even some experimentation with 3D at the time, as well as other times of in-theater experiences to break the "fourth wall."

In more recent times, 3D and IMAX have been the big differentiators with the latter of particular interest for major motion picture franchises. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is set to dominate the IMAX screens across the world for the first month of its release and it looks like "Star Trek Beyond" is looking to follow suit in this regard.

The new movie is directed by Lin, who stepped in once J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two reboots, opted for taking on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The new movie will feature the same cast members, namely Jon Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. However, Idris Elba will also appear as the film's villain, marking his first foray into the franchise.

The 2009 reboot was a huge critical and box office success, grossing $257 million domestically on a $150 million budget. Its sequel, "Star Trek Into Darkness," only grossed $228 million with even greater expectations.
