There will be a short hiatus for "Madam Secretary" and the show will return on Dec. 13. But for those who are wondering what happened in the last episode, the thrilling climax could lead to World War III for the fictional show.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Maria Ostrov and President Dalton finally have a Skype session following the U.S. silent attack on Moscow's power grid that caused a blackout in the city.

Dalton denied involvement in the situation, alluding to their own denial of involvement in the hack of Air Force One. Of course this turns into a silent game of chicken very quickly and Ostrov leaves the conversation saying they will retaliate.

This worries Elizabeth McCord and she wants to take action to prevent a war. That is when they hear that Russia has turned off three pipelines that supply Western Europe with gas. This causes an international crisis that directly says aligning with the U.S. is bad for other nations affected by the cutoff.

Dalton wants to strike back hard, but Elizabeth convinces him to let her go to the U.N. and make a case for themselves against Russia, given the evidence they have. This will be in hopes of securing and maintaining international support for their cause.

On the eve of her address though, Henry comes to her and says he does not think that Russia was involved, following the intelligence he got back from DIA. This also puts him in a bad situation, which could possibly land him in jail. DIA explicitly told him not to share the intel with Elizabeth, but he chose to anyway considering the millions of lives that could be lost.

After further investigation, she is finally able to put more pieces of the puzzle together and learns that Ukraine was behind the hack and wanted to frame Russia for it. But the U.S. has already pledged support for the Ukraine and will continue enforcing a no-fly zone over the nation.

When the episode concludes, a Russian plane has breached the no-fly zone and Dalton gives his troops permission to shoot it down.
