The New York Islanders are long past their glory days. After appearing in five straight Stanley Cup Finals and winning the first four in the early to mid 1980s, the team embarked on a slow and steady decline. Over the years, the team has been marked by periods of player apathy, fan disgust and foolish hope (like last year's playoff appearance). However, with the team headed to Brooklyn for the 2015-16 NHL Season, there's hope on the horizon -- oh, and a boat load of cash.

So the Brooklyn move is obviously very important and while the city is still part of Long Island, it has a whole different identity. So will the hip, gentrified Brooklyn warm up to a suburban sports team? If that is to happen, perhaps a name change unfortunately needs to be considered.

The influx of cash from fans who'd clamor to buy new hats, jerseys and mugs may be too much for the financially on-thin-ice squad. Yet, the Sports Business Journal reports that team brass have promised to not change anything, besides introducing a very special item.

"The Islanders plan to maintain their current name, logo and primary colors of orange, white and blue. There are, however, plans down the line for a third jersey for the team that could draw from the Nets' signature black-and-white look."

The team's name can be changed and it would upset some fans, yet the upside seems limitless. They just need to avoid the Fisherman logo though! At the end of the day, arguing over a team's colors, mascots, dancers, and fight songs is secondary to the fact that you have a team. The Islanders were almost moved across state lines to places like Kansas City!

Team Owner Charles Wang, who reportedly is looking to sell his majority ownership stake in the team, highlighted the journey it took to move the Islanders to Brooklyn.

"[Bruce Ratner and I] both had a dream six or seven years ago to build something special for our fan bases," Wang said. "We wanted to keep our teams local. The Islanders will join the Nets at Barclays Center in 2015. It's been a long journey, but we're finally here."

Ratner, as you may know, spearheaded the Influx of the Brooklyn Nets' arrival in Brooklyn, and the creation of the Barclays Center as well.

"Charles got offers, good offers, to move the Islanders out of state. But he kept the Islanders here," Ratner stated.

Now the only thing Islanders players and management have to avoid is listening to the Beastie Boys seminal tune "No Sleep till Brooklyn." They need to be alert at all times no matter the city!
