Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE units can now have a firmware upgrade, particularly to the latest Android version. This is through a popular custom firmware called CyanogenMod 13.

A post on Team Android revealed that CM13 ROM is now compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE. Particularly, it can be installed to S4 LTE devices bearing the model number I9505.

Though it is still buggy, the CyanogenMod 13 custom firmware released for the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE already offers a smooth and stable performance. The post described it as "very usable ROM."

However, since it is not an official release from the South Korean tech giant, users need to download a custom recovery tool to be able to flash the ROM. Furthermore, the recovery tool will also allow users to create a proper backup for all the important data and settings stored on the smartphone.

Installing a custom ROM such as the CyanogenMod13 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow update could wipe clean the smartphone, thus, the need for recovery tools such as ClockWorkMod Recovery or CWM and the TeamWin Recovery Project or TWRP to create the backup.

Ensuring a high battery level is also important when installing a custom ROM. Android experts suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE I9505 should have at least 80% battery to prevent any interruptions that could brick or permanently damage the smartphone.

Released in April 2013, the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE has 5-inch Super AMOLDE capacitive touchscreen boasting of a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 441 ppi pixel density. GSM Arena also noted that the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

At launch, it came pre-installed with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Officially, users can upgrade it only to Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Under the hood, the smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm APQ8064T Snapdragon 600 chipset paired with a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.9 GHz.

The official Lollipop firmware, particularly version 5.0, will be released for the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE soon. But with the release of custom CM13 firmware, users can opt to experience the latest Android Lollipop available.
